Palm Sunday in the church of St. John of Shanghai
The festive worship service devoted to one of the most significant feasts – Entry of the Lord into Jerusalem (Palm Sunday) took place in our Temple in the period from April, 14/27 to April 15/28, 2013. Willow has always represented the holiday, spring, new life and future renewal in Russia.
That is why it has also become a religious symbol. In Orthodoxy, willow twigs are called “twigs of virtue”: they metaphorically reach for the sky
On the eve of Palm Sunday, mural painting of walls and ceilings was completely finished in our Temple, the church decked with willows and springly illuminated by sunlight filled the hearts of parishioners with joy, and the worship service was held in prayerful unity.
Bishop Tikhon (Vasilkovsky) carried out Liturgy with elder Alexander (Veberov).
At the sermon the Master reminded parishioners of the vanity of worldly glory: “Palm Sunday is closely associated with the celebration of Lazarus Saturday, when the Lord performed a great miracle – raised a four-day Lazarus. The next day Christ rode into Jerusalem on a young donkey, welcomed by a lot of people who learned about the miracle of the raising of Lazarus. People put their clothes on His way, cheering crowd welcomed Christ with palm branches. But five days later the same crowd will yell, “Crucify him!”
The Master reminded of the oncoming of Holy Week and urged everybody to pass this most important week, preparing us to the Bright Sunday – the Easter, adequately.
Holy Week is devoted to the last days of the earthly life of the Lord Jesus, his crucifixion, death on the cross and burial.
Every day during a church service in the temples passages from the Gospel reminding of it are read.
Each day of the week was named the Great – and it highlights the unusual nature and importance of this day for the people and the greatness of what the Savior did for us.
During the Holy Week lent is particularly severe, and the faithful try to keep it strictly to feel the sense and deed of Christ. The purpose of Holy Week is to make a person as close to the understanding of what Christ did for us as possible, and to prepare people spiritually to the joy of the Resurrection of Christ
